How to Choose the Right Deadbolt for Your Las Vegas Home

Deadbolt lock installation Las Vegas home front door

Walk through any Las Vegas hardware store and you'll find dozens of deadbolts ranging from $15 to $300. The price difference is not random — it reflects real differences in security, durability, and resistance to attack. Choosing the wrong one means your front door is only as secure as a builder-grade knob lock.

Understanding ANSI Grading — The Only Number That Matters

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rates residential door hardware on a three-tier scale. Every lock sold in the United States must carry one of these ratings.

Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating. A Grade 1 deadbolt must withstand 250,000 open/close cycles, resist a 75-pound weight drop from 8 feet, and survive 10 strikes from a 75-pound steel ram without failing. This is what security professionals install.

Grade 2 meets lighter requirements — 150,000 cycles and fewer impact tests. It's adequate for interior doors and light-use secondary entries, but not your front door.

Grade 3 is the minimum standard and what most builders install by default. It offers basic functionality but limited resistance to forced entry. Most front doors in Las Vegas new-construction homes come with Grade 3 hardware.

Nevada Heat and Your Deadbolt

Las Vegas summer temperatures regularly exceed 115°F, and metal door frames expand significantly in this heat. A cheap deadbolt installed with tight tolerances in winter will bind and stick by July. We see this constantly in service calls across Summerlin, Henderson, and Spring Valley.

Look for deadbolts with solid brass or solid steel bolt construction rather than hollow or pot-metal castings. The bolt itself should extend at least one inch — ANSI Grade 1 requires this minimum throw length. Some premium brands offer 1.5-inch bolts for additional security against kick-in attacks.

Our Top Recommendations for Las Vegas Homes

Best overall: Schlage B60N — Grade 1, solid brass construction, available at most hardware stores for $40–$60. This is what we install most frequently at Las Vegas homes for the best combination of security and value.

Best high-security: Medeco Maxum — pick-resistant, drill-resistant, and bump-proof. Keys are restricted, meaning copies can't be made without your authorization. Ideal for rental properties, homes with frequent contractor access, or any Las Vegas homeowner who wants maximum protection.

Best smart lock: Schlage Encode Plus — Grade 1 deadbolt with Apple Home Key and WiFi built in. You can lock and unlock from your phone, grant temporary codes to housekeepers or guests, and receive activity alerts. We install these throughout Las Vegas and the setup takes about 45 minutes.

What About Strike Plates?

A Grade 1 deadbolt is only as strong as the door frame it's mounted in. Most residential doors are installed with 3/4-inch screws into a thin door jamb. A single kick can split the frame regardless of lock quality. Upgrade to a heavy-gauge steel strike plate installed with 3-inch screws that reach the structural framing behind the jamb. This is a $20 part that makes a dramatic difference.
